Aha! Hack: Is This the New Pegboard? Margot and Fergus Henderson’s Clever Grid System

Fergus and Margot Henderson's Metal Grid Panels from The Modern House

There’s not a year that goes by that we don’t come across a gushing tribute to Julia Child’s revolutionary use of pegboards in her kitchen. No wonder: Her ability to see beauty in the humble and her elevation of organization to an art form still feels fresh and relevant today. Recently, we saw a kitchen storage method that floored us in a similar way as Child’s pegboards. And, naturally, we spotted it in the home of two professional chefs: famed London culinary couple Margot and Fergus Henderson.

Margot is the chef/co-owner of Rochelle/Canteen and the newly opened Rochelle/ICA; Fergus—dubbed “an unlikely gastronomic god” by British Esquire—is the chef/owner of St John. They live with their three children in a large Victorian that has old bones but a modern sensibility. In their all-white kitchen is this ingenious storage strategy: a quartet of wall-mounted, industrial-looking metal grid panels, from which they hang all sorts of cooking essentials—ladles, strainers, pans, cookie cutters, you name it. (Interestingly, like the pegboard, wire grids were originally intended for use in shops to store and display wares.)

Might the grid system be the new pegboard?
