Over on Remodelista today, we’re featuring the interior renovation of a modestly sized 1970s beach cottage in Chilmark, Massachusetts, on Martha’s Vineyard. The overhaul, led by New York interior designer Ellen Hamilton, retained the home’s original footprint but brought it more in line with the tastes of the homeowner, who has “a real affection for anything Scandinavian,” says Hamilton. Because it serves as the guest cottage to a much larger house next door, this space didn’t require much in the way of storage—there’s a walk-in closet in the bedroom and a small basement with kayaks and beach gear—but a functional entryway for guests, who come in and out of the cottage all day long, was a must. Let’s dissect the look:

Above: The Gym Hook, by Swedish designer Staffan Holm for Danish company Hay, is the storage star of this space. Here, it holds a bag and sun hat, but the circular shape makes it ideal for hooking umbrellas, dog leashes, or even towels. Shown above in light gray, it’s $35 for the small size at Danish Design Store. (Note: The hooks pictured in the entryway are in natural, which are currently sold out online.) Above: A Woven Seagrass Basket with Handles stores hammam-style striped beach towels in the entryway of this home (the beach is only a short walk away). In your entryway, it might corral shoes, newspapers, or kids’ backpacks; $42.95 on Amazon. Above: Finnish designer Alvar Aalto’s classic birch Bench needs no introduction. Designed in 1945, it remains a classic almost 75 years later; $593 at Finnish Design Shop. Above: The entryway is subtly lit with a Mini Dome light from Allied Maker, designed by Parsons grad Ryden Rizzo and made in New York. Above: Hamilton picked hardy slate stone floors for this high-traffic space, which welcomes both sandy toes (post beach) and wet soles (post outdoor shower). This 6-inch by 24-inch Hampshire Slate Floor Tile is $4 per square foot at Home Depot. Above: The homeowner selected the color for the cottage’s interior: All White from UK paint purveyor Farrow & Ball. “It’s my client’s favorite white,” said the designer.
