Design Sleuth: Stacked and Wall-Mounted Tables as Kitchen Storage

I bought my secondhand, freestanding kitchen units off a man on an industrial estate in the middle of nowhere, so I am seldom to be found in the concept stores and showrooms of South London.

That said, leafing through the autumn/winter lookbook of Neptune, a 20-year-old British brand with branches in South London and across the UK, I was intrigued by a kitchen design hack featuring a stacked kitchen island.

Stacked coffee tables in Neptune kitchen
Above: In the center of this kitchen, the stylists at the showroom have stacked two industrial-look coffee tables to create an open kitchen island and worktop. (Evidently, they’ve fashioned an extra surface at the base of the structure to create a third wooden shelf.)

The designers have achieved this with their new, box-frame range of tables, the Carter range. This is Neptune’s first foray into the industrial design aesthetic. The tables are crafted from aged, solid oak and a slim, powder-coated steel frame. A slim console costs £390 ($507), a squat coffee table £590 ($767), and a simple side table £410 ($533), but there’s nothing stopping you re-creating the look with any similar box-frame design. Ikea, Maisons du Monde, and West Elm all stock similar designs.
