I keep about a half-dozen reusable grocery bags in my car for my weekly supermarket runs. Sometimes I forget to bring them into the store, and I’m “forced” to use its paper grocery bags—and when that happens, I’m secretly delighted. No, I don’t enjoy killing trees; I just really like the design of an old-school brown paper bag. The size is perfect. The shape is simple and attractive. And best of all, it has a flat bottom and stands upright, making bagging a far easier task than when I use my floppy totes.
I recently decided to track down reusable market bags that have the same qualities as classic paper shopping bags. They are more expensive than the bags I currently own and use, but I would love to buy one or two of these reusable paper-bag doppelgängers for errands and trips to the farmer’s market. Here are seven that fit the bill.
Above: ItalicHome’s Market Bag is water-resistant and comes in multiple colors, waxed or unwaxed (shown is the waxed canvas in caramel); currently on sale for $30 on Etsy. Above: This sturdy Reusable Grocery Bag in Waxed Canvas by Colony Co. has the same proportions as a standard paper grocery bag—17 by 12 by 7 inches; $37.95 on Amazon. Above: Slightly larger than the average paper grocery bag, the Apolis Market Bag features leather handles and a customizable message; $68 at Apolis. The one shown is $68 at Need Supply. Above: The We Are Always Moving Industries Grocery Tote comes in two sizes (the large is about the same size as a standard paper shopping bag). You also have the option of long handles, short handles (shown), or butcher style (no handles); $44 to $51 for the large. Above: I really like the jagged edge (just like on a real brown paper bag!) on Peg & Awl’s Bake House: No. 7 Market Bags and the fact that they are washable; $34 and $42 at Peg & Awl. Food52 also carries its full line of canvas bags (including a wine tote and baguette bag). Above: The Cotton Duck Paper Grocery Bag from Dharma Trading Co. is just $7.19. Above: The minimalist and chic Funagata Waxed Canvas Bag, in beige, is £83. Looking for more bag ideas?
