10 Easy Pieces: Umbrella Stands

Every climate has a rainiest month. And yet we found it surprisingly difficult to locate an attractive yet unobtrusive umbrella stand to tuck into a corner by the front door.

We’re happy to report that many, many hours of research paid off. We’ve rounded up a variety of materials–wood, metal, rattan, glass, and even plexiglass–and made a list of our 10 favorite umbrella atands for a small space:

Above: A handmade Oak Umbrella Stand By Method Studio in Linlithgow, Scotland has 12 wooden staves held together by elastic spokes (available in olive as shown or orange) has a drip-tray base; £240 at London Undercover.

Above: With a brass tray to collect rainwater, a birch veneer Umbrella Stand 115 designed by Finnish designer Alvar Aalto has a compact triangular shape that makes it easy to tuck into a corner. It measures 10.6 inches by 9.1 inches in width and depth and is 18.6 inches tall; $520 from Horne.

Above: A Tolix Umbrella Holder made of powder coated pressed steel comes in two colors (gray or white, as shown). It has rubber feet to prevent it from slipping (in case in runoff) and stands 22.5 inches high; $195 from Design Within Reach.

Above: A chromed steel Platea Umbrella Stand by JM Massana has an aluminum tray to catch water from wet umbrella. For prices and more information, see Mobles 114.

Above: A Chelsea Umbrella Stand woven of iron strands with an antique zinc finish measures 24.75 inches tall and 9 inches in diameter and is $129.95 from Crate and Barrel.

Above: A stainless steel Blomus Mesh Umbrella Stand is $145 from Gracious Home.
